Eco-Design

When it comes to the environment,
Our Eco-Designed Vessel has less impact

"Globally we are revolutionary
On Nantucket we are unique"

Q: What is an Eco-Designed Boat?
A: Eco-Design is a standard by which a vessel is constructed to
minimize the impact it has on the environment.

We have incorporated a host of features into our vessel in an effort to minimize our impact on the environment while maximizing the safety and enjoyment of our passengers. Any one of our design features greatly aids in the preservation of the environment, but when all are combined together, the synergistic effect is compounded.

Q: What does your Eco-Design do for your carbon footprint?
A: We were reducing the size of our carbon footprint before it became a buzzword.

The very nature of our Eco-Design reduces our fuel consumption on every trip. We keep adding new technology as it becomes available to increase our fuel efficiency. In 2007 alone, we were able to increase our overall operating efficiency by over 20% with a few modifications to our hull and the introduction of higher efficiency propellers. That is a pretty significant number and we are proud of that. For 2008 we will be further refining our hull modifications to increase our efficiency once again.

HULL
We started with the strongest shallow draft hull available.
Our hull can operate in less than 12" of water and has a Hull Thickness of 11"

We navigate the shallowest waters without disturbing the sensitive bottom

This hull also allows us to beach the boat like a landing craft.
We have easy access to the beach through our front gate.
A few steps take you from the boat to the beach!

OPEN DECK

Our Open Deck Layout ensures that everyone has a great view.
The open design and low sides offers the best perspective for viewing wildlife.

Our guests get an intimate experience where they feel like participants, not passengers
By limiting our passengers to 12, our guests enjoy the best eco-tour available

Some so called "eco-tours" run large, 50 passenger ferry boats.
"You could ride a bus, or you can ride with us"

ENGINE

We run a quiet, clean burning Yamaha outboard engine.
Our Yamaha has a High Pressure Direct  Injection (HPDI)  technology.
This gives us unsurpassed  efficiency with very low emissions.
Our motor exceeds the Federal EPA  2006 emissions requirements.
Earning a California C.A.R.B. two-star rating for very low emissions 2006.

Q: What does all that mean?
A: Our engine runs quietly without emitting lots of smelly fumes and exhaust.

Boats that run on diesel fuel belch out black smoke that smells like a bus.

Animals flee from it and so should you
That is not the kind of thing anyone wants to smell all day, especially on an eco-tour

OBSERVATION TOWER
Our boat is equipped with a Tower for our Captain to steer from.
It is a fully functioning 2nd station with navigation electronics.
This redundancy of systems adds to the safety of our vessel.

Driving from the tower, the Captain can see far out, and deep under the water.
This lets him find the animals quicker and lets him approach them safely.

We see more wildlife and the wildlife we see stays in a calm, natural state.

TRANSOM / BRACKET
We have an electro-hydraulic engine bracket to raises our motor on our transom made by Porta Products.
Our motor runs in clean water which reduces drag and increases efficiency.
We burn less fuel and run in shallower water.

The Porta Bracket lets us raise the propeller ABOVE the bottom of the boat.

Why is this important?
We do not impact the grass beds on the bottom.
This causes prop scarring of these fragile ecosystems.

Our propeller retracts up where there is very little chance of an animal being cut

Not even jet drives can claim this.
Jet drives can scour out a grass bed through the suction of their intakes.
