Q. How many seals will we see?
A. LOTS OF THEM! Muskeget has a population of over 4,000 seals and the number is growing every year. We may not see 4,000 seals at one time since the seals are active creatures, but we will see a lot. On a good day we will see hundreds of seals. On a great day when we do not see much boat traffic or big ferry boats around, we will see thousands.          Click Here to See Our Seal Picture Gallery

Q. When is the best time to go on a seal cruise?
A. Our morning trip is the best cruise to see the greatest number of seals. The seals are still resting on their roost islands and they have not been disturbed by any human activity. These are the trips that the seals tend swim right up to the boat while we drift. It is your best chance to see them really , really close.
Our afternoon cruises see A LOT of seals as well. Our vessel allows us access into the most remote areas to find seals. We can go where other boats can not go due to our Eco-Design. Your Nantucket Adventures Crew WILL FIND SEALS. That is why we have the first and only SEAL CRUISE GUARANTEE on Nantucket Island.

Q. What kind of seals will we see?

A. We see mainly Gray Seals but we do have Harbor Seals in the population as well.

Q. What do seals eat?

A. Seals like to eat all sorts of fish and squid. They will even eat shellfish and lobster.

Q. Can we feed the seals?
A. Seals are wild animals and by feeding wild animals we can change their natural behaviors. We do not want to do that! We could make it hard for the seals to survive on their own. It is also not allowed by Federal Law.

Q. Can we pet the seals?
A. Seals sure are cute, but they are wild animals. It would be great if you could snuggle and pet them but it would be dangerous to us and possibly dangerous for the seals. Seals have sharp canine like teeth for catching their prey. If the seals ever got scared they could give us a healthy bite. Also, the same Federal Law that makes it illegal to feed the seals makes it illegal to molest the seals in any way, petting included.

Q. How long do seals live?
A. Depending on the health of the herd, the abundance of food and the number of predators, seals can live up to 40 years. Most males in the wild live to 30 and the females can reach 40.

Q. What are the natural predators of seals?
A. Seals natural predators are sharks and killer whales. Great white sharks are probably the most widely known predator of seals, but Orcas will feed on them as well. Man is also a threat to the seals by hunting, but also by pollution and plastic in the water.

Q. Are there sharks around the seals on Muskeget Island?
A. There are sharks in all the oceans, but the shallow waters of Muskeget Island make it very difficult, even dangerous for sharks to hunt there. If a shark entered the shoals of Muskeget, the varied bottom and fast currents could easily trap a shark on a sandbar. If the tide was going out, the shark could get stranded and die. So it is not impossible to see a shark around Muskeget Island, but it is highly improbable. It is one of the main reasons why the heard of seals on Muskeget is doing so well and their population is growing so quickly.

Q. How curious / inquisitive are the seals?
A. Seals are very curious. They like to pop their heads out of the water to watch and see what is going on around them. Sometimes a whole herd will be watching you at once. Some of the younger seals are very curious and they will often come right over to say "Hi." Some even get playful and start water fights by splashing us.

Q. Do the the seals make the "Arrr Arrr" sound when we see them?
A. The seals are very vocal. Most of the time however they snort, squeal and howl. Seal snorts are really funny to hear and see.
